Data Solutions Project Manager

Bureau of Meteorology Full Time

Job Description

The Bureau is Australia’s weather, climate, water, oceans and space weather agency. Our work touches the lives of all Australians every day. Our products and services include observations, forecasts, warnings, analysis and advice. They cover Australia’s atmosphere, water, oceans and space environments.

Within the Bureau’s Business Solutions Group (BSG), the National Security and Space Program (NSSP) is the primary provider of weather, water, climate, ocean, and space weather information to Australia’s national security agencies. NSSP plays a critical role in supporting the Department of Defence, including the Australian Defence Force (ADF). NSSP is essential to the Bureau’s delivery of contractual obligations to Defence and to support Australia’s broader national security responsibilities.

NSSP maintains a comprehensive understanding of the data and products used by national security and Defence agencies, as well as the methods and technical systems through which these stakeholders receive and use Bureau products and services.

The NSSP Data Solutions Project Manager plays a key role in deepening customer understanding and translating insights into tailored data-driven solutions and successful project outcomes. This role bridges external user needs and internal capabilities—aligning customer goals across NSSP’s national security and Defence interfaces with the Bureau’s organisational and technical requirements to deliver integrated, fit-for-purpose and cost-effective data solutions.

The role reports to the Manager, National Security and Space Capability Delivery (EL2), and has project management responsibilities that involve science and information technology components with both national and international scope. Demonstrated experience in these domains and a qualification in project management are mandatory.

The successful candidate will collaborate with project managers and NSSP leadership to deliver customer solutions aligned with NSSP operations and the Bureau’s strategic goals, embedding governance, ensuring data security and compliance, and driving performance optimisation.

At times, the role leads on cross-disciplinary solutions or coordinates and oversees integration activities across various Bureau specialist areas. Problem-solving with internal and external teams, a willingness to listen widely, build consensus, and work in an Agile fashion to incrementally build and demonstrate concepts that point towards solutions is essential.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of NSSP’s role to support its national security and defence stakeholders, through proactive engagement to anticipate and accommodate future developments, as data and technological requirements evolve.

Information for applicants

The role is ongoing and located in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Perth or Sydney. Further information about the position, including eligibility, selection criteria, and details on how to apply, is available on the Bureau of Meteorology’s website Careers page.
