How to get the best out of your next work event
It’s time to network… what’s your go-to move? Do you camp out next to the drinks table and offer some small talk or perhaps awkward silences, eye contact avoidance or some extensive oversharing are more your style? Here are six tips to help you slay your next event are our Lot Fourteen experts with their top tips and tricks. Your future career thanks you.
Prioritise quality over quantity. Instead of trying to meet everyone, focus on establishing genuine connections with a few individuals. Listen actively, ask questions, and share your passion. It’s okay to be vulnerable. This can lead to valuable partnerships, advice, and opportunities in the long run.
Become a Compliment Crusader! “I saw your LinkedIn post on X, it really got me thinking about Y”, or even something simple like: “I love that necklace. Where is it from?”. Open with thoughtful and sincere compliments, demonstrating genuine interest and warmth and watch the conversations blossom.
It’s important to be yourself. Share personal tidbits about your life, you never know what you might have in common with someone.
Prepare. Know who will be there ahead of time, who you want to talk to, and why.
Go have fun and stay curious. Be genuinely interested in the people you’re having conversations with. People are more likely to remember you and the interaction if they feel you’ve taken a genuine interest in them. Authenticity is key.
If you’re an introvert, prepare to exit your comfort zone and be exhausted. If you’re an extrovert, think hard about sucking the oxygen out of the room and removing the ability of others to engage. Finally, write up your notes post event promptly to share with your broader team.
